Encarsia berlesei

Encarsia berlesei is a specialized parasitic wasp belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Aphelinidae. Far from being a pest, it is a highly regarded beneficial insect widely utilized in agricultural practice as a biological control agent to regulate populations of the white peach scale, Pseudaulacaspis pentagona.

This parasitoid wasp targets scale insects that primarily infest various fruit and ornamental trees. Common host plants include mulberry, peach, plum, and cherry trees. By focusing its lifecycle on these specific hosts, Encarsia berlesei helps prevent severe damage to the vascular systems of the trees caused by the feeding activity of the scales.

The biological cycle of this insect is synchronized with its host. The female wasp inserts its eggs underneath the protective shield of the scale insect. Upon hatching, the larva feeds on the soft tissue of the host, ultimately killing it before emerging as an adult. Depending on ambient temperatures, the development cycle is relatively rapid, allowing for multiple generations per year.

Scale insects themselves represent a significant threat to orchard health, causing stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and, in severe cases, the death of entire branches due to sap extraction. The presence of Encarsia berlesei acts as a natural dampening force on the scale population, reducing the need for intensive chemical applications that could harm the orchard ecosystem.

Effective management and encouragement of this parasitoid involve several key strategies:
