Encarsia inaron is a Hymenopteran insect belonging to the family Aphelinidae. Within the agricultural sector, it is recognized not as a primary pest, but as a critical natural parasitoid that plays a fundamental role in the biological suppression of whitefly populations in greenhouses and field crops.
This species is commonly associated with various horticultural crops, primarily tomatoes, cucumbers, and ornamental plants. Its presence is vital in environments where whitefly species, such as Trialeurodes vaporariorum or Bemisia tabaci, pose a significant threat to production yields and overall plant health.
The biology of Encarsia inaron is highly specialized. The adult female searches for suitable whitefly larvae to serve as hosts. After oviposition inside the host, the parasitoid larva develops internally, consuming the whitefly's tissues. This development results in the characteristic darkening of the host, known as mummification, signaling the successful completion of the cycle.
