Encarsia strenua is a member of the Aphelinidae family within the order Hymenoptera. While often discussed in the context of pest management, it is primarily categorized as an important biological control agent, functioning as a parasitoid that targets various species of whiteflies in protected cultivation environments.

This species is highly effective against whiteflies that infest greenhouse crops, including tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and ornamental species. By suppressing whitefly populations, Encarsia strenua helps prevent the severe physiological damage and viral diseases that whiteflies transmit to host plants.

The biology of this insect involves endoparasitism, where the female oviposits directly into the larval stages of the host whitefly. The developing larva of the parasitoid consumes the interior contents of the host, eventually leading to its death and the transformation of the host's cuticle into a darkened protective shell, commonly referred to as a "mummy."
