Encyrtids

Encyrtids (family Encyrtidae) are a diverse group of hymenopteran parasitoids belonging to the superfamily Chalcidoidea. While primarily recognized as essential biological control agents, they interact with the agroecosystem by regulating populations of major pests that damage crops, such as scale insects and mealybugs.

In terms of systematic classification, Encyrtids belong to the order Hymenoptera. They are generally small, often metallic in appearance, and exhibit highly specialized behaviors to locate their hosts. Their classification is critical for entomologists who design biological pest control programs for orchards and greenhouses.

The biology and life cycle of these insects involve endoparasitism. Female Encyrtids typically deposit eggs into the host's body. The developing larvae feed internally on the host tissues, ultimately causing the death of the pest. Some species demonstrate polyembryony, where a single egg produces multiple larvae, allowing for a rapid increase in population density when host availability is high.

Regarding crop damage and economic importance, Encyrtids are usually beneficial, but their presence indicates the existence of significant host pests on the crops. The pests themselves—primarily scale insects—cause direct damage by extracting plant sap, which leads to leaf yellowing, branch dieback, and reduced fruit quality. The presence of Encyrtids is a natural sign of an active pest infestation that requires management.
