Chinese ghost moth

Endoclita sinensis

Description

Systematic position: Endoclita sinensis belongs to the family Hepialidae, order Lepidoptera. Known as a significant stem borer, this moth species is recognized for its ability to infest the woody tissues of various trees, causing extensive structural damage and physiological stress to host plants.

Affected crops: The pest has a broad host range, including various fruit trees like apple and pear, as well as essential forest species such as Paulownia, chestnut, and alder. It is particularly damaging to young plantations where the internal tunneling of the larvae can disrupt growth and compromise the tree's health.

Biology and lifecycle: The insect typically completes its life cycle within one to two years. Eggs are laid near the base of the tree or directly onto the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the bark and eventually penetrate the woody heartwood or sapwood, where they create intricate tunnel systems while consuming the living tissue of the tree.

Damage and severity: The damage is primarily caused by larvae, which feed inside the stems and branches. This activity results in the formation of tunnels, leading to restricted nutrient transport and reduced overall vigor. External evidence includes frass and sawdust ejection from boreholes, which may eventually lead to branch breakage and susceptibility to fungal diseases.

Protection measures: Effective control of Endoclita sinensis requires an integrated approach to reduce population levels:

  • Sanitary pruning of infested branches and stems to remove active larvae.
  • Direct application of systemic insecticides into the larval tunnels.
  • Monitoring of moth flight periods using pheromone traps.
  • Promoting overall tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation to help plants withstand and recover from larval feeding.
