Description
The tobacco mirid (Engytatus nicotianae), belonging to the Miridae family within the order Hemiptera, is a notorious pest known for attacking a variety of crops. This bug is characterized by its small size and high mobility, making it a challenging organism for growers to manage, especially in intensive vegetable production systems.
The host range of Engytatus nicotianae primarily includes Solanaceous plants. Key affected crops are tobacco, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. The pest is particularly fond of young, tender growth, which it colonizes during the early stages of plant development, significantly impacting the initial establishment of the crop.
Regarding its biology, the insect undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, five nymphal instars, and adult stages. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature, with shorter generation times observed in warmer conditions. Both nymphs and adults reside on the underside of leaves, often near the veins, where they feed protected from environmental stress.
The damage caused by the tobacco mirid is distinct: it feeds by piercing plant cells and sucking out the sap. This process causes localized chlorosis, spotting, and eventual necrotic lesions on the leaves. Severe infestations lead to stunted plant growth, twisted or curled leaves, and a significant reduction in fruit set and quality, directly impacting the final yield.
