Ensina

Ensina is a genus of fruit flies belonging to the family Tephritidae, within the order Diptera. These insects are recognized as specialized pests that primarily target plants within the Asteraceae family. While not as economically devastating as some other fruit fly species, their presence in commercial flower and seed production can significantly impact yield and quality.

Systematically, the genus Ensina is classified under the Tephritidae family, often referred to as "picture-winged flies" due to the distinct patterns on their wings. Their biological specialization allows them to exploit specific host plants, making them highly adapted to the internal environment of flower heads where they complete their developmental stages.

The primary crops affected are ornamental plants and certain Asteraceae grown for their seeds. The larvae are the main destructive stage, boring into the flower buds and feeding on the developing ovaries and seeds. This feeding activity not only destroys individual seeds but can also invite secondary pathogens, such as fungi or bacteria, leading to the rot of the entire flower head.

The life cycle of the insect involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically oviposit into the buds of host plants. Once the larvae hatch, they begin feeding immediately within the receptacle. Pupation often occurs within the plant tissue or, in some species, in the soil, depending on the environmental conditions and the specific life strategy of the fly.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling Ensina. Essential measures include the destruction of reservoir hosts (weeds) around the field, crop rotation, and the use of physical barriers or pheromone traps. Chemical control, when necessary, should be applied strategically during the peak flight of adults, targeting the flies before they have the chance to oviposit into the buds.
