The organism does not consume crops, as the adults do not feed at all, and the nymphs subsist on aquatic debris and algae. The biology of the species involves a long aquatic nymphal stage that lasts up to one year, followed by a very short adult stage. The transition from nymph to winged adult usually occurs in spring.
