Description

Ephydatia fluviatilis, belonging to the family Spongillidae and the order Spongillida, is a common freshwater sponge. In the agricultural sector, it acts as a bio-fouling agent that poses significant risks to irrigation networks and industrial water management systems rather than directly attacking crops.

The cultures primarily affected are those relying on precise water delivery systems, such as hydroponic greenhouses and orchards using drip irrigation. Because these sponges thrive in nutrient-rich water, hydroponic solutions can inadvertently provide an ideal habitat for their rapid expansion.

The biology of Ephydatia fluviatilis is marked by its resilience through the formation of gemmules. These dormant, reproductive bodies are highly resistant to desiccation and standard chemical treatments, allowing the sponge to persist in irrigation pipes during off-seasons and colonize new areas when conditions improve.

The damage caused is primarily mechanical and hydraulic. The growth of these sponges inside pipes creates significant friction and blockages, leading to pressure drops in irrigation lines. This results in uneven water distribution, which impairs crop development, and can lead to catastrophic failure of pumping equipment.

Protective measures should focus on prevention and physical exclusion. Installing advanced filtration systems is critical to prevent the entry of sponge larvae.
