Description

The striped blister beetle (Epicauta unilineata) is a member of the Meloidae family within the order Coleoptera. Recognized as a significant agricultural pest, this beetle is known for the presence of cantharidin, a potent vesicant in its hemolymph that can cause skin irritation upon contact with humans and livestock.

These beetles primarily target plants within the Solanaceae and Fabaceae families. Economically important crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, soybeans, and alfalfa are frequently subjected to severe feeding damage. Their ability to aggregate in large numbers allows them to defoliate entire fields in a very short amount of time.

The biology of Epicauta unilineata is characterized by hypermetamorphosis, a complex development process. While the adult stage is strictly herbivorous, the larval stages often act as predators of grasshopper eggs or as parasites in the nests of solitary bees.
