The donkey (Equus africanus), while traditionally a domesticated animal, can be classified as a significant agricultural pest when it acts as an uncontrolled herbivore in crop-producing areas. Belonging to the order Perissodactyla and family Equidae, donkeys have a resilient digestive system that allows them to thrive on a variety of forage, often leading them to target valuable agricultural crops when natural pasture is scarce.

Donkeys damage a wide range of agricultural products, including cereal grains, vegetables, and fruit tree plantations. Their feeding behavior is not limited to leaves; they are known to strip bark from young trees, which often leads to the death of the saplings and significant economic losses for orchard owners. Their ability to graze on diverse vegetation makes them a constant threat to various farming sectors.

The biology of the donkey is marked by high adaptability to arid environments and a highly efficient digestive tract capable of breaking down fibrous plant material. Unlike many insect pests, donkeys are active throughout the entire growing season. They do not have a specific life cycle phase that limits their impact, meaning that fields are vulnerable to damage from the time of sowing until the harvest is completed.

The harmfulness of donkeys lies in both direct consumption and physical trampling of crops. When donkeys enter a field, they not only consume the harvest but also compact the soil through heavy hoof traffic, which can negatively affect soil structure and water infiltration. This dual impact—biomass removal and soil degradation—severely reduces crop yields and can destroy large patches of land in a very short period.

To protect crops from donkey damage, physical barriers remain the most effective strategy. This includes high-tensile wire fencing, sturdy mesh, or electrified fencing systems. Farmers are also encouraged to manage livestock grazing zones to prevent escapes and to use non-lethal deterrents such as guard animals or noise-based systems. Implementing these management practices is essential to minimize the risk to agricultural productivity.
