Description

The blueberry aphid (Ericaphis scammelli) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is recognized as a significant threat to commercial blueberry and cranberry production, known for its ability to infest young tissues and rapidly colonize host plants.

This pest exclusively targets members of the Ericaceae family, particularly the genus Vaccinium. The aphids are most commonly found on the undersides of leaves and the growing tips of shoots, where they utilize their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant phloem sap, disrupting the normal physiological development of the plant.

The biology of Ericaphis scammelli is characterized by a rapid reproductive cycle. Overwintering occurs primarily in the egg stage on the stems of host plants. Once temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch, and successive generations are produced through parthenogenesis, allowing for explosive population growth during the active growing season.
