American elm aphid

The American elm aphid (Eriosoma americanum) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Aphididae. It is widely recognized for its unique ability to induce large, leaf-rolling galls on elm trees (Ulmus species), which serve as protection and a food source during the early stages of its complex life cycle.

The host range of this aphid is specific. While the primary host is the elm tree, where it creates characteristic leaf galls, the insect is heteroecious, meaning it migrates to secondary host plants, primarily members of the Asteraceae family, where it feeds on roots during the summer months before returning to elms in the autumn.

The biological cycle begins in the spring when overwintering eggs hatch. The nymphs migrate to the emerging elm leaves. As they feed, they trigger a hormonal response in the leaf tissue, causing it to fold and roll into a leathery, pouch-like structure. Inside these galls, colonies of aphids thrive, well-shielded from environmental stress and many predators.

The economic and aesthetic impact is significant in landscaping and forestry. Infested trees often suffer from stunted growth and premature leaf drop due to heavy gall formation. The disfigured foliage significantly detracts from the tree's health and appearance, potentially causing long-term stress, especially in younger, vulnerable saplings.

Once the galls are established, chemical control becomes substantially more difficult, highlighting the importance of preventative monitoring and early intervention.
