Pear root aphid

Systematic position. The pear root aphid (Eriosoma herioti) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. This insect is a specialized pest that maintains a cryptic lifestyle, primarily inhabiting the root zone of fruit trees. Due to its underground existence, it is often overlooked until significant damage occurs to the host plants.

Crops and damage. The pest primarily attacks pear trees, although it can occasionally be found on other pome fruits. The aphids feed on the sap of the root system, causing the formation of abnormal growths known as galls. This feeding pattern severely restricts the tree's ability to absorb water and nutrients, leading to a decline in vigor and overall health.

Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle of Eriosoma herioti is complex and involves migration between roots and above-ground parts of the host. The aphid produces several generations throughout the growing season. Overwintering typically occurs as eggs or nymphs located in the crevices of the root collar or directly in the upper layers of the soil near the trunk.

Economic impact. Infestation by this aphid causes stunting, leaf chlorosis, and premature senescence of the foliage. In young orchards or nurseries, severe infestations can lead to high mortality rates of seedlings. Furthermore, the root damage creates entry points for fungal pathogens, which can cause root rot and accelerate the collapse of the tree.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Eriosoma herioti:

• Stringent inspection of nursery stock for root galls before planting.
• Application of systemic insecticides specifically labeled for root-zone application during the peak season.
• Maintaining soil health and irrigation to help trees recover from feeding damage.
• Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of heavily infested trees.
• Monitoring the root zone regularly in established orchards to detect early stages of infestation.
