Description
Systematic position: The Japanese elm aphid (Eriosoma japonicum) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized insect that maintains a close biological relationship with trees of the genus Ulmus throughout its lifecycle.
Host plants and damage symptoms: The primary hosts are various elm species (Ulmus spp.). The aphid induces the formation of galls on leaves, where they build large colonies. Infested leaves become curled, twisted, and discolored, which eventually leads to premature leaf drop and overall tree stress.
