Grape leafhopper

The grape leafhopper (Erythroneura dolosa) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. This tiny, sap-sucking insect is a significant pest in viticulture, known for its ability to rapidly multiply and cause extensive damage to grape foliage, eventually affecting the overall vigor and productivity of the grapevine.

The primary host plant is the grape (Vitis vinifera). The adults and nymphs inhabit the underside of the leaves, where they feed by piercing the plant cells and extracting sap. This feeding behavior causes characteristic stippling or bleaching of the leaf surface, which can lead to severe chlorosis if the infestation level is high.

The lifecycle of Erythroneura dolosa involves overwintering as adults in protected areas such as leaf litter, mulch, or crevices in the bark of the vine trunk. As temperatures rise in the spring, the adults migrate to the developing leaves to feed and reproduce. Depending on the climate, the pest can complete multiple generations within a single growing season, leading to high population densities by mid-summer.

The damage caused by these insects is both direct and indirect. Direct damage involves the removal of cell contents, which interferes with photosynthesis and reduces the plant's ability to produce carbohydrates. Indirectly, the stress caused by the feeding makes the vines more susceptible to secondary diseases and environmental stressors, which negatively impacts fruit quality, sugar accumulation, and winter hardiness.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this pest. Cultural practices like removing overwintering sites are essential. Biological control agents, including parasitic wasps and predatory bugs, play a significant role in suppressing populations. When chemical control is necessary, it is crucial to target early nymph stages using selective insecticides to minimize impact on beneficial species and prevent resistance development.
