The Western grape leafhopper (scientific name Erythroneura elegantula) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. This tiny, pale-colored insect is native to parts of North America and is a major concern for vineyard managers due to its direct feeding habits on Vitis species.
This pest exclusively targets grapevines, both commercial cultivars and wild rootstocks. By feeding primarily on the underside of the leaves, the insect extracts vital cell contents, which disrupts the vine's physiological functions and can lead to reduced fruit quality and decreased vine vigor over consecutive seasons.
The lifecycle of Erythroneura elegantula includes egg, nymphal (five instars), and adult stages. Females lay eggs inside the leaf tissue, which protects them from environmental stressors.
