Description
The three-banded leafhopper (Erythroneura tricincta) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is recognized as a notable pest of vineyards, particularly in North America, causing economic damage through its feeding activity that affects vine productivity.
This species primarily feeds on grapevines. Both nymphs and adults cause damage by extracting sap from the undersides of leaves. This feeding process results in the destruction of chlorophyll-containing cells, which directly interferes with the photosynthesis efficiency of the grapevine.
The life cycle typically spans several generations per season. Adult leafhoppers overwinter in leaf litter, debris, or other protected sites near the vineyards. As temperatures rise in spring, they migrate to the emerging foliage to feed and initiate the reproductive process by laying eggs within the leaf tissue.
The damage becomes visible as small stippling or white spots on the foliage. As the population density increases, these spots merge, leading to premature yellowing, leaf necrosis, and early senescence. Such damage impacts fruit quality, leading to reduced sugar levels and weakened vines prone to winter cold injury.
Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are essential for control. Cultural practices such as removing leaf litter and weeds significantly reduce overwintering sites. Chemical control involves the application of insecticides targeting the nymphal stages, ensuring treatments are timed to minimize the impact on beneficial insects.
