Virginia creeper leafhopper
Erythroneura ziczac
Description
The Virginia creeper leafhopper (Erythroneura ziczac) is a small sap-sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is named for the distinctive zigzag pattern found on the wings of the adult, which serves as a key diagnostic feature for field identification by agronomists and viticulturists.
While commonly associated with Virginia creeper, this pest is a significant threat to cultivated grapevines (Vitis vinifera). The insect feeds by piercing leaf tissues and extracting cellular fluids, which can stress the vines and reduce their overall vigor, especially in commercial vineyards where vine health is paramount for fruit quality.
The life cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. The insect typically overwinters as an adult in sheltered locations such as leaf litter, tall grass, or under loose bark. Once temperatures rise in the spring, they migrate to host leaves to lay eggs. Under favorable climatic conditions, the leafhopper can complete multiple generations within a single growing season.
Damage typically manifests as stippling or bleaching of the leaves, where the chlorophyll is removed, leading to mottled, chlorotic areas. Severe infestations can cause leaf bronzing, premature senescence, and leaf drop. This damage reduces the vine's photosynthetic capacity, which negatively impacts fruit set, berry sugar accumulation, and winter hardiness of the vines.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for managing this species include:
- Sanitation by removing leaf litter and weeds in and around the vineyard to destroy overwintering sites.
- Regular scouting and monitoring using yellow sticky traps to determine the timing of insecticide applications.
- Targeted application of insecticides during the nymphal stage when the pest is most vulnerable to control measures.
- Conservation of natural predators, such as predatory bugs and parasitic wasps, which help suppress leafhopper populations naturally.
