Fairy shrimp of the genus Eubranchipus belong to the order Anostraca. While often viewed as part of the aquatic ecosystem, in specific agricultural contexts such as flooded rice paddies, they can become detrimental pests that interfere with the establishment and early growth of crops.

The damage caused by these crustaceans is primarily observed during the germination and seedling stages. They feed on tender plant tissues and root systems. High population densities can lead to sparse stands and significant stunted growth, directly impacting the final yield potential of the agricultural field.

The biology of Eubranchipus is centered on the production of highly resilient encysted eggs. These cysts can survive prolonged periods of drought and freezing in the soil profile.
