Eucactophagus
Description
Systematic position. The genus Eucactophagus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These weevils are highly specialized feeders that have evolved to exploit the unique physiology of plants within the Cactaceae family.
Host plants and damage. This pest primarily attacks various species of cacti. The damage is particularly severe in cultivated succulent collections, where the internal structural integrity of the plants is compromised by the feeding activities of both larvae and adults.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs into the succulent tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the core of the cactus, consuming the nutrient-rich pith, which allows them to remain protected from external environmental factors.
Damage patterns. Symptoms include sunken lesions, unexplained wilting, and tissue rot. As the larvae tunnel through the plant, they create pathways that expose the cactus to secondary bacterial and fungal infections, often resulting in the sudden collapse and death of the plant specimen.
Control measures. Integrated pest management includes rigorous quarantine protocols for new acquisitions and regular inspections for signs of entry holes. Effective control involves applying systemic insecticides that are absorbed by the plant. In extreme cases, physical removal of infested tissue or total disposal of heavily damaged plants is necessary.
