Description
Systematic position: Eucactophagus weissi is a specialized beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (weevils). This insect is an obligate feeder on Cactaceae, evolved to utilize the succulent tissues of its host plants as both a primary food source and a protected environment for its developing larvae.
Host range: The pest primarily affects various species within the cactus family. While these weevils occur in natural habitats, they are particularly problematic in managed collections, greenhouses, and nurseries where high plant density allows the pest to spread rapidly between susceptible specimens.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle encompasses four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult weevils are nocturnal and often remain hidden during the day. Females use their specialized snout to bore into the plant surface and deposit eggs. The resulting larvae tunnel into the succulent stem, where they feed and develop, sheltered from external predators and environmental changes.
Damage and severity: The internal feeding habits of the larvae cause extensive damage to the plant's vascular system. Symptoms include depressed, discolored spots on the skin and overall softening of the stem. As larvae destroy the interior tissue, the plant becomes unstable and loses its ability to transport nutrients, frequently leading to total collapse and death of the specimen.
Control measures: Management of this pest requires a proactive approach due to the internal nature of the larval stage:
- Regular visual inspections for puncture marks or soft spots on the plant surface.
- Quarantining new plants before introducing them to an established collection.
- Applying systemic insecticides that are absorbed into the plant tissue.
- Prompt removal and destruction of heavily infested plants to reduce the local population of the weevil.
