Linden aphid

Systematic position: Eucallipterus is a genus of aphids belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. The most prominent member of this group is the linden aphid, Eucallipterus tiliae. These insects are highly host-specific and have co-evolved to thrive on linden trees (genus Tilia).

Host plants and damage: The primary hosts are various species of linden trees. The aphids typically colonize the undersides of leaves. Feeding causes yellowing of foliage, premature leaf drop, and stunted growth. The overall stress on the tree can make it significantly more susceptible to environmental stressors and other biological pests.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves overwintering as eggs on the bark of linden branches. In the spring, nymphs hatch and begin to feed, leading to several generations of parthenogenetic females. During the summer, both winged and wingless forms are present, allowing the aphid colony to spread effectively throughout the canopy of the host tree.

Character of injury: The most visible sign of infestation is the production of copious amounts of honeydew. This sticky substance covers the leaves and branches, serving as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. The black mold layer inhibits photosynthesis, potentially reducing the tree's vigor and creating an unpleasant aesthetic appearance for ornamental trees.

Control measures: Management strategies are essential for protecting landscape and street trees. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices should include:

• Promoting natural predators like ladybugs, lacewings, and hoverflies.
• Monitoring for early signs of aphids to prevent explosive population growth.
• Application of systemic insecticides or horticultural oils during the early growing season when the first colonies appear.
