Description
Systematic position. The birch aphid (genus Euceraphis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. These insects are specialized pests that inhabit deciduous trees, primarily those belonging to the Betulaceae family. They are widely distributed in temperate regions where their host plants grow.
Host plants. The primary hosts for Euceraphis species are birch trees (Betula spp.) and sometimes alders (Alnus spp.). They are common in urban landscapes, parks, and natural forest stands, often infesting both young saplings and mature, established trees.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Euceraphis is strictly adapted to the phenology of their host trees. They overwinter in the egg stage, typically situated in bark crevices or near buds. As trees begin to bud in spring, the eggs hatch, and the aphid population begins to rapidly expand, producing multiple generations throughout the growing season.
Damage and economic importance. Feeding by Euceraphis causes chlorosis, leaf curling, and premature defoliation of birch trees. The insects excrete honeydew, which leads to the growth of sooty mold, obstructing photosynthesis. Severe infestations weaken the tree's health, making them more susceptible to secondary pests and environmental stressors.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling birch aphids. Key strategies include:
- Encouraging natural predators like lady beetles, lacewings, and hoverflies.
- Monitoring trees during the early spring to detect initial colonization.
