Euchorthippus elegantulus is a species of grasshopper belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. Unlike migratory locusts, this species is considered a non-swarming grasshopper, yet it remains a significant pest in steppe and grassland ecosystems where it can cause localized damage to cultivated grain crops.

The primary hosts for this pest are grasses (Poaceae). Agricultural fields containing wheat, barley, oats, and forage grasses are most at risk. The pest population density typically increases in fields bordering uncultivated meadows or pastures, from where the insects migrate into the crops as the season progresses.

The biology of Euchorthippus elegantulus is characterized by a univoltine life cycle, meaning it completes one generation per year. The insects overwinter in the egg stage, laid in soil pods by females during the late summer and autumn. Nymphs emerge in the spring, typically starting from May, and progress through several larval instars before reaching adulthood in mid-summer.

Regarding damage, the insects consume leaf tissue, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity. When population numbers are high, the feeding can progress to the stripping of leaves and even damage to the developing ear of cereals. This results in significant yield loss and degradation of the overall quality of forage crops.
