Taxonomy: The species Euclemensia bassettella, commonly referred to as the cactus moth or gall-forming moth, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Cosmopterigidae. It is a highly specialized herbivore that has evolved to feed exclusively on specific species within the Cactaceae family.

Host plants and infestation: This moth predominantly affects cacti belonging to the genus Opuntia. The larvae penetrate the succulent tissues, where they establish their feeding sites. These sites are easily identified by the presence of gall-like swellings on the surface of the cactus pads, which are caused by the larvae's feeding and the plant's physiological response.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is tightly integrated with the growth phases of the host plant. Female moths oviposit on the external surface of the cactus. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the tissue and induce the formation of a gall. The entire larval development and pupation occur within this gall, providing the insect with significant protection from predators and environmental stressors.

Damage and economic impact: The economic impact is primarily seen in commercial cactus nurseries and botanical collections. By destroying the internal tissues, the larvae disrupt the vascular system of the cactus. This results in stunting, malformation of the pads, and reduced aesthetic value. Heavy infestations can lead to the collapse and death of younger or weaker plants.

Control measures: Managing Euclemensia bassettella requires a strict integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

• Manual removal and immediate destruction of infested gall tissues to prevent moth emergence.
• Regular scouting of plants, especially new additions, to ensure early detection.
• Application of systemic insecticides during peak adult activity to disrupt the reproductive cycle.
• Maintaining proper cultural conditions to ensure host plants remain vigorous and less susceptible to severe damage.
