Eugnoristus is a genus of dipteran insects belonging to the gall midge family (Cecidomyiidae). These specialized pests live a hidden life cycle during their larval stage, primarily attacking the generative organs of plants. Systematically, they are classified within the order Diptera, suborder Nematocera, and are distinguished by their highly specific feeding habits among other members of the family.

The primary crops affected by this pest include cereal grains, specifically wheat and barley. Significant damage is often recorded in fields located in regions with climates favorable for the development of gall midges. The economic impact is manifested by a reduction in both grain quality and yield quantity, as well as ear deformation, which leads to substantial losses for farmers.

The biological development of the species is closely linked to the phenology of the host plant. The life cycle consists of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adult insects are active during the flowering period of cereals, laying eggs directly into the spikelets or under the glumes. The emerging larvae feed on the sap of the ovaries, which prevents the proper development of the grain kernels.

A characteristic sign of infestation is empty ears or the presence of shriveled, underdeveloped kernels within the ear. Infested plants often become more susceptible to fungal infections that thrive at the puncture sites. Visually, affected areas may differ in color from healthy tissues, appearing lighter or greyish due to the disruption of photosynthesis and metabolic processes within the grain head.

Protection strategies involve a combination of agrotechnical and chemical measures. Key approaches include:

• Strict crop rotation and maintaining spatial isolation from previous year's stubble residues.
• The use of resistant or tolerant cereal varieties.
• Application of systemic insecticides during the peak flight of adults to disrupt the reproduction cycle.
