Description
The celery fly (Euleia fratria), also known as the parsnip leafminer, belongs to the family Tephritidae in the order Diptera. It is a significant agricultural pest that specifically targets plants within the Apiaceae (formerly Umbelliferae) family.
The primary crops affected by this pest include parsnips, celery, parsley, and various wild species of the Apiaceae family. Damage is caused by the larval stage of the insect, which mines the leaf tissue, significantly reducing the vigor and yield of the affected plants.
The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinter as pupae in the soil. Upon emergence in the spring, adult flies lay eggs on the undersides of host plant leaves. Depending on regional weather conditions, the pest can complete several generations throughout the growing season.
Damage is characterized by visible tunnels or 'mines' that appear on the leaves. As larvae consume the internal tissues, the leaf surface becomes blistered, discolored, and eventually brown and necrotic. Severe infestations can result in total leaf loss and stunted plant development, impacting root crop quality.
