Description
The celery fly (Euleia heraclei) is a destructive dipteran insect belonging to the Tephritidae family. It is a well-known pest that specifically targets plants within the Apiaceae family, causing significant economic damage in both commercial farms and private gardens.
This pest primarily attacks celery, parsnips, parsley, and lovage. Due to its ability to survive on various wild host plants, such as giant hogweed, the celery fly can maintain high population levels in surrounding environments, making it a persistent challenge for growers of susceptible vegetables.
The life cycle begins with the overwintering pupae hidden in the soil. Adults emerge during late spring and summer, mate, and lay eggs on the leaves of host plants. Depending on climatic conditions, the pest completes one or two generations per season, which allows for rapid multiplication if left unchecked.
Larval activity is the most damaging phase of the insect's life cycle. The larvae mine into the leaf tissue, creating visible tunnels between the upper and lower leaf surfaces. This mining activity prevents photosynthesis, causes the foliage to wither and turn brown, and ultimately stunts the growth of the roots and stems of the affected plants.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural control methods include rotating crops away from infested areas and removing wild Apiaceae weeds that serve as reservoirs. In commercial settings, monitoring with yellow sticky traps is used to time insecticide applications, ensuring the pest is targeted before significant leaf damage occurs.
