Grape seed wasp

Euoxysoma vitis

Description

The Grape seed wasp (Euoxysoma vitis) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Eurytomidae, order Hymenoptera. Unlike generalist pests, this species has evolved to feed specifically on the seeds of the grapevines, making it a significant concern for viticulturists, particularly in regions where the pest is established.

The damage is exclusively caused by the larvae, which develop inside the grape seeds. By consuming the nutrient-rich endosperm of the seed, the larva completes its life cycle. This process destroys the seed's viability and often results in the premature abscission of the affected grapes, leading to reduced yield and poor fruit quality.

The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. The larvae overwinter inside the seeds, which may remain in shriveled berries on the vine or fall to the soil surface. In late spring, coinciding with the flowering period of the grapevine, the adults emerge to mate and lay eggs, using their ovipositors to penetrate the developing berry tissue.

The economic impact is primarily related to yield loss. Because the damage is internal, it is often not detected until the berries start to wither or drop. Large infestations can compromise a significant percentage of the crop, making the fruit unsuitable for fresh market or winemaking purposes due to the presence of damaged seeds and necrotic tissue.

Integrated pest management is crucial for the control of Euoxysoma vitis. Growers are advised to implement strict sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying all infested berries and crop debris after the harvest. Chemical control with registered insecticides must be timed precisely to coincide with the adult emergence phase to be effective in reducing population density.
