The hibiscus defoliator moth (Eupterote hibisci) is a species of moth belonging to the family Eupterotidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of various plants, particularly within the Malvaceae family. Its ability to proliferate rapidly makes it a concern for both ornamental gardens and commercial plantations.
The damage is primarily caused by the larval stage of the moth. These caterpillars are notorious for their voracious feeding habits. They often congregate in large groups during their early instars, which allows them to defoliate branches or entire plants in a very short period of time, leading to severe physiological stress for the host.
Host plants typically include species of Hibiscus and other related Malvaceae, though the moth can adapt to various broadleaf trees depending on the ecological region.
