Description

The Eupteryx atropunctata, commonly known as the variegated leafhopper, is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a small but widespread pest that frequently targets horticultural crops and medicinal herbs in temperate climate zones across Europe and beyond.

This insect has a broad host range, feeding on plants such as potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, and various members of the Lamiaceae family, including mint and sage. Its presence in both garden and field environments often goes unnoticed until the damage to the foliage becomes clearly visible through discoloration.

The life cycle of the variegated leafhopper typically includes multiple generations per year. Adults overwinter in protected areas or plant debris and move to crops in early spring. Eggs are deposited inside the leaf tissues, and the nymphs undergo several molts before reaching maturity, often congregating on the undersides of leaves.

The damage caused by these insects involves the extraction of sap from the mesophyll cells. This process leaves characteristic pale, mottled spots on the upper leaf surface, which can lead to widespread yellowing (chlorosis) and necrosis if the infestation is severe. Furthermore, they are vectors for several phytoplasmas that can cause stunting and poor development in infected host plants.

To control the variegated leafhopper, integrated pest management (IPM) is essential. Cultural practices such as maintaining clean fields, removing host weeds, and utilizing row covers for young plants are highly effective. If necessary, chemical controls involving insecticides should be applied based on economic thresholds, ensuring that applications are timed to target the nymphal stages for better results.
