Description

The golden leafhopper (Eupteryx aurata) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a common pest that impacts both wild and cultivated plants, often causing economic losses in vegetable gardens and commercial agricultural fields due to its sap-sucking habits.

This pest has a diverse host range, frequently attacking plants such as potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and various ornamental plants. It is also commonly found on nettles, which function as a primary host reservoir, allowing the pest to colonize nearby crops easily throughout the summer months.

The biology of Eupteryx aurata involves several overlapping generations in a single season, depending on the ambient temperature. Females deposit eggs within plant tissues. Upon hatching, the nymphs feed on the underside of leaves, and their rapid life cycle enables population spikes within a short period.

Damage symptoms appear as small, whitish or pale yellow spots on the upper leaf surface, commonly referred to as stippling. As the insect feeds, the chlorophyll is destroyed, leading to chlorosis, leaf curl, and eventually, the senescence of the affected foliage, which stunts the plant's overall growth.
