Description
The sorghum head bug, known scientifically as Eurystylus australis, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that specifically targets sorghum crops in various regions, leading to severe yield losses if not managed correctly.
This insect primarily attacks sorghum plants (Sorghum bicolor). It feeds on the developing grains within the sorghum panicles. Both nymphs and adults use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract nutrients from the kernels, which directly impairs grain development and total yield production.
The life cycle of E. australis is closely synchronized with the sorghum growth stages. Eggs are deposited into the glumes of the panicles, and nymphs emerge to feed immediately. The population can multiply rapidly under warm, humid conditions, making the crop highly vulnerable during the flowering and grain-filling stages.
Damage symptoms include shriveled, discolored, and empty grains. The injury caused by feeding often facilitates secondary infections by fungi, which further degrades grain quality and market value. High infestation levels can lead to almost total loss of the grain in severely affected panicles.
