Pistachio seed wasp

Eurytoma boucekia

Description

Systematic position: Eurytoma boucekia belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Eurytomidae. Unlike most members of its family, which are parasitoids, this species has evolved into a specialist phytophagous pest, feeding directly on the internal structures of pistachio nuts.

Crops affected: The primary host of this insect is the true pistachio (Pistacia vera). It is considered a major economic pest in regions where pistachios are grown commercially, often causing significant decline in both yield quantity and quality if not managed properly.

Biology and life cycle: The insect typically completes one generation per year. Adult wasps emerge in spring when the pistachio fruit is in the early developmental stage. The female inserts her ovipositor through the soft hull of the developing nut to deposit eggs. The larva hatches and remains inside, consuming the kernel, and completes its development within the hard shell before pupating.

Damage and pest status: The damage is primarily internal, making it difficult to detect during harvest. The larva consumes the embryo and endosperm of the seed. Once the adult emerges, it creates a small exit hole in the shell. Infested nuts are often lightweight, prone to secondary fungal infections, and completely unfit for human consumption, leading to severe commercial losses.

Control measures: Management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical strategies:

  • Sanitation: Destroying infested "mummy" nuts left on trees or ground after harvest.
  • Chemical control: Applying insecticides during the peak flight of adults to prevent egg-laying.
  • Biological control: Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids in the orchard ecosystem.
  • Cultural practices: Pruning and orchard maintenance to disrupt the lifecycle.
  • Regular monitoring: Using sticky traps to track adult population levels.
