Eurytoma maslovskii

Eurytoma maslovskii

Description

Systematic position: Eurytoma maslovskii belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Eurytomidae. This species is recognized as a specific parasite that affects the fruit development of stone-bearing trees, often going unnoticed until harvest time.

Affected crops: This pest primarily targets stone fruits, such as apricots, plums, cherries, and cherry plums. It poses a significant threat to orchards, potentially leading to widespread fruit drop if the infestation levels are high and left unmanaged.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is strictly synchronized with the flowering and fruiting period of the host trees. The larvae overwinter inside the pits (seeds) of the infested fruit. In the spring, the adult wasps emerge, mate, and the females lay eggs directly into the developing ovary of the fruit, where the larvae will feed on the developing kernel.

Damage characteristics: The damage is hidden from the eye for most of the season because the larvae consume the kernel inside the pit. The external appearance of the fruit remains largely unchanged until the damage causes premature fruit drop. This makes monitoring and identification challenging for orchard managers.

Protection measures: Management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical intervention.

  • Complete removal and destruction of fallen fruits to prevent larvae from overwintering.
  • Deep cultivation of soil under the tree canopy to disturb pupation sites.
  • Application of targeted insecticides during the adult emergence period.
  • Regular orchard monitoring to identify early signs of premature fruit shed.
