Cattleya wasp

Eurytoma orchidearum

Description

The Cattleya wasp (Eurytoma orchidearum) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Eurytomidae. It is a highly specialized species that primarily targets orchids, particularly those within the Cattleya alliance, causing internal damage to plant tissues.

This pest is notorious for its cryptic nature, as the larval stages develop entirely inside the orchid's new growths, shoots, and pseudobulbs. Because the larvae remain hidden from view, the damage is often discovered only after it has become severe, making control efforts challenging for orchid growers.

The life cycle begins when an adult female lays eggs inside the tender tissue of a developing orchid shoot. Once hatched, the larvae feed on the internal plant matter, creating hollow chambers. The larvae then pupate within these chambers before emerging as adults, leaving behind small, visible exit holes in the plant stem.

The primary symptom of an infestation is the presence of distorted, swollen, or asymmetrical new shoots. Affected growths fail to mature properly and are often stunted. If left untreated, the infestation can severely compromise the plant's health, preventing it from producing flowers and potentially leading to the death of the specific growth or the entire plant.

Control measures primarily focus on early detection and physical removal. Growers should inspect their plants frequently for abnormal swelling on new growth. Any infested shoots must be surgically removed and destroyed immediately to prevent the emergence of a new generation of wasps. While chemical control is difficult, systemic insecticides can be used to manage the population during the adult flying season.

  • Rigorous isolation of new acquisitions.
  • Immediate removal of malformed plant parts.
  • Disposal of infested material away from the collection.
  • Application of systemic pesticides during adult emergence.
