Striped leafhopper

The striped leafhopper (Euscelis lineolatus) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. This small insect is recognized in agronomy not only as a sap-sucking pest but also as a significant vector of various phytoplasmas and plant viruses that affect cereal crops worldwide.

This species primarily targets a wide range of monocots, including wheat, barley, rye, and various meadow grasses. It thrives in agricultural landscapes, often migrating from wild grasses to cultivated fields as the season progresses, which complicates the management of its population density in large-scale farms.

The life cycle of Euscelis lineolatus typically consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Eggs are generally laid within the host plant tissues, providing them with protection during overwintering. Once temperatures rise, nymphs emerge and start feeding, progressing through several instars before reaching maturity, often completing multiple generations per year depending on the climate.

Direct damage occurs when the leafhopper extracts phloem sap, leading to chlorosis, stunted growth, and general wilting of the host plant. However, the indirect damage is far more severe, as the feeding process facilitates the transmission of viral pathogens, such as barley yellow dwarf virus, causing significant reductions in grain quality and total crop yield.

Effective control measures require a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Agronomists recommend planting resistant varieties where possible and maintaining clean fields to reduce habitats for the insect. When monitoring reveals threshold levels of the pest, the application of systemic insecticides is often necessary to prevent viral outbreaks within the crop.
