West Indian sweet potato weevil

The West Indian sweet potato weevil (Euscepes postfasciatus) is a significant coleopteran pest belonging to the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a major threat to sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) production globally. Due to its cryptic lifestyle and rapid reproduction, it is often listed as a high-priority quarantine pest in many agricultural regions.

While the sweet potato is its primary host, the weevil can also infest other plants within the Convolvulaceae family. The damage is primarily caused by larvae that bore into the fleshy stems and tubers of the host plants. In severe cases, the infestation results in total crop loss, as the internal structure of the tubers is completely hollowed out by larval galleries.

The life cycle of Euscepes postfasciatus is completed in stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs into small punctures made in the plant tissue. After hatching, the larvae tunnel through the root system. The life cycle is heavily influenced by ambient temperature, with warmer climates accelerating the development of multiple generations within a single growing season.

The economic impact of this pest is severe because it ruins the marketability of the product. Even low levels of infestation are often unacceptable for export or domestic sale. Besides direct feeding, the galleries created by the weevils serve as entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal infections, which accelerate the decomposition of the tubers during storage or transit.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control this pest. Key strategies include the implementation of strict quarantine regulations for the movement of tubers, the use of certified weevil-free planting materials, and the destruction of infested crop residues immediately after harvest. Chemical controls, combined with pheromone-based monitoring systems, are also used to keep population densities below damaging levels.
