Affected crops: The primary host of Euxesta leucomelas is maize (Zea mays). The larvae are specialized feeders that cause significant economic losses by attacking the ears of the corn, which are the most valuable part of the plant for grain production.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult flies are attracted to the silk of maize ears, where they mate and oviposit. The larvae emerge and tunnel into the ear, feeding directly on the developing kernels during the milk and dough stages of kernel maturation.

Damage and pest status: The damage is twofold: direct loss of kernel biomass due to larval feeding and indirect damage caused by increased susceptibility to ear rots and fungal infections.
