Euxesta stigmatias, commonly known as the corn silk fly, is a dipteran insect belonging to the family Ulidiidae. It is a significant pest in the tropical and subtropical Americas, primarily impacting corn crops by attacking the reproductive structures of the plant during the critical silking stage.
The primary hosts for this pest include sweet corn and field corn. The larvae are specialized feeders that inhabit the ear tips, consuming the developing silks and grains. This activity disrupts the pollination process and compromises the overall yield quality, often leading to unmarketable produce.
The life cycle of the corn silk fly consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs on the fresh silks of the corn ear. Once the larvae emerge, they move down the silks into the ear.
