Description
The Turnip moth (Euxoa aquilina) is a member of the Noctuidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as one of the most destructive soil-dwelling pests globally, capable of causing significant losses in various agricultural sectors due to the feeding habits of its larvae.
The larvae, often referred to as cutworms, exhibit polyphagous behavior, attacking a wide range of host plants. Major targets include cereals, sugar beets, corn, sunflowers, and diverse vegetable crops. The damage is particularly severe during the emergence of seedlings and the early vegetative stages of plant growth.
The biology of Euxoa aquilina involves an overwintering stage as larvae within the soil profile. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae migrate to the surface to feed on weeds and then move onto crop plants. Development includes several larval instars, with pupation occurring in the soil before the adults emerge as nocturnal moths.
The primary form of damage involves the severing of stems and roots at or just below the soil surface. This leads to the rapid wilting and subsequent death of the affected plants. Due to their habit of hiding in the soil during daylight hours, significant populations can remain undetected until widespread damage becomes evident in the field.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Recommended practices include deep autumn plowing to expose larvae to natural predators and weather extremes, effective weed management to reduce larval food sources, and the strategic application of insecticides. Scouting for larvae using soil samples is a critical step in determining the necessity of chemical intervention.
