White cutworm

The white cutworm (Euxoa scandens) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Noctuidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This moth species is primarily documented in North America, where it poses a constant threat to a wide range of horticultural and field crops by feeding on both subterranean and above-ground plant parts.

As a member of the cutworm group, Euxoa scandens displays a versatile diet. It infests various crops, including tomatoes, peppers, cabbages, beans, corn, and salad greens. Because the larvae are nocturnal, they often go unnoticed until significant damage is already visible, making scouting and early detection crucial for integrated pest management.

The life cycle of the white cutworm involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters as a partially grown larva in the soil. As spring arrives, larvae resume their development, feeding voraciously on emerging seedlings. Pupation occurs in earthen cells formed within the soil profile, followed by the emergence of the adult moths.

The primary damage occurs when larvae sever the stems of young plants near the soil line, leading to rapid wilting and plant death. In some cases, the larvae climb the host plants to feed on foliage and buds. This feeding behavior can lead to severe stand depletion, resulting in significant yield losses if left uncontrolled during the early stages of plant growth.

Effective control measures include a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural practices such as maintaining weed-free fields, performing regular tillage to disrupt soil-dwelling stages, and crop rotation are essential. During outbreaks, the application of targeted insecticides, often timed with evening activity, is recommended to effectively reduce larval populations in the affected areas.
