The Black-spotted dart moth (scientific name Euxoa temera) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is widely recognized as a significant agricultural pest. These moths are members of the cutworm group, meaning their larvae (caterpillars) live in the soil and feed on the subterranean or base parts of various plants.

This pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a broad range of crops. It causes economic damage to cereals, maize, sunflowers, sugar beets, and various vegetable crops. The larvae are particularly dangerous to seedlings, as their feeding habits often result in complete destruction of young plants within a short period.

The biology and lifecycle of Euxoa temera generally involve one generation per year. The insect typically overwinters as eggs or young larvae buried within the soil profile. As soil temperatures rise in spring, the larvae become active, feeding on emerging roots and stems. Pupation occurs inside the soil, and the adult moths emerge during the summer months to mate and lay eggs.

Damage is typically characterized by the severing of stems near the soil surface. Because the larvae remain hidden under soil clumps or debris during the day, they are often overlooked until significant crop loss has already occurred. Their activity is primarily nocturnal, and they are capable of moving from one plant to another, leading to patchy, sparse crop stands.
