The white-line dart (Latin: Euxoa tritici) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Noctuidae family within the order Lepidoptera. Often categorized among the cutworms, this moth species presents a serious threat to various crops due to the feeding behavior of its larvae, which inhabit the upper layers of the soil.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plants. It commonly affects cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and rye. Furthermore, it causes damage to sugar beets, maize, sunflower, and potatoes. Its presence is often underestimated until visible gaps in crop rows appear, as the larvae feed largely beneath the soil surface.

The life cycle of Euxoa tritici typically consists of a single generation per year. The insect overwinters in the soil, usually in the egg stage or as early-instar larvae. As soil temperatures rise in the spring, the larvae become active. They spend the daylight hours hidden underground and emerge at night to feed, chewing through the stems of young seedlings at the root collar.

The damage caused is characterized by the sudden wilting and death of young plants. When larval density is high, the pest can decimate entire patches of a field, leading to severe stand thinning. This damage is particularly critical during the early growth stages of the crop, as the plants are less capable of compensating for the loss of stems.

Management strategies for the white-line dart rely on a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Deep autumn plowing is highly effective as it disrupts the overwintering sites of the larvae. Additionally, keeping fields free of weeds is crucial to remove alternative food sources. Chemical treatment with insecticides should be applied based on monitoring data, preferably in the evening when larvae are most active on the soil surface.
