Description
The genus Exallomochlus belongs to the mealybug family (Pseudococcidae) within the order Hemiptera. These insects are significant agricultural pests known for their ability to feed on plant sap, which causes substantial physiological stress and growth retardation in various plant hosts.
This pest primarily affects tropical and subtropical crops. In particular, Exallomochlus hispidus is recognized as a serious threat to cocoa, mango, and citrus plantations. Under greenhouse conditions, this pest can also infest a wide variety of ornamental plants, posing a constant threat to nursery stocks.
The biology of Exallomochlus follows a hemimetabolous development. Females produce a white, waxy secretion that encases the egg masses, providing protection against desiccation and environmental stressors. The mobile first-instar nymphs, commonly called crawlers, are the main stage responsible for the spread of the infestation between plants.
Plant damage symptoms include leaf curling, premature fruit drop, and chlorosis. As the insects feed, they excrete honeydew, which facilitates the growth of sooty mold. This fungus interferes with photosynthesis and respiration, significantly reducing the overall vigor and market value of the affected crops.
