Originally identified in the Sulawesi region, this species has become a concern for agricultural production due to its ability to colonize and damage economically important perennial crops, particularly in tropical climates.

The host range of this mealybug is diverse, affecting various tree species, including cocoa (Theobroma cacao), coffee, and citrus. These insects predominantly infest succulent parts of the plant, such as leaf axils, tender stems, and developing fruit. By piercing the plant tissues and extracting phloem sap, they deplete the plant's nutritional resources.

The life cycle of Exallomochlus sulawesicus consists of several nymphal stages before reaching adulthood. Females typically produce a waxy ovisac to protect their eggs. The first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, are the primary dispersal stage, moving actively across the plant surfaces to find suitable feeding sites or spreading to adjacent plants.

The damage caused by this pest is twofold: direct feeding damage and secondary symptoms. Direct feeding results in stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and potential fruit drop. Additionally, the accumulation of honeydew secreted by the mealybugs promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight from leaves and disrupts photosynthesis, thereby significantly reducing the overall vigor and productivity of the host plant.

Management strategies for this species require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This involves:

• Regular field monitoring to detect early-stage infestations;
• Application of systemic insecticides that target sucking pests;
• Preservation and introduction of natural enemies, such as lady beetles and parasitoid wasps;
