Description

The grassland leafhopper (Exitianus exitiosus) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in many warm-climate regions, known for its ability to rapidly colonize cereal fields and cause extensive damage through feeding and disease transmission.

This species is highly polyphagous, targeting a wide range of monocotyledonous crops. Primary hosts include maize, wheat, barley, rice, and sorghum. Furthermore, various perennial and annual grasses serve as critical reservoir hosts, enabling the insect population to survive and proliferate between crop cycles.

The life cycle of Exitianus exitiosus consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females typically deposit eggs within plant tissues. The nymphs undergo several molts, feeding on plant sap throughout their development. Due to their high reproductive rate, multiple generations can occur annually, depending on local climate conditions.
