The Indian leafhopper (Exitianus indicus) is an insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is widely recognized as a significant agricultural pest that thrives in tropical and subtropical climates, where it poses a constant threat to a variety of host plants, including cereal crops and various grasses.

The species displays remarkable adaptability, allowing it to colonize diverse environments. While native to the Asian continent, its presence has been recorded in other global regions, raising concerns among plant health authorities. Its ability to tolerate varying environmental conditions makes it a difficult pest to eradicate once it establishes in a new agricultural area.

The biology of Exitianus indicus is characterized by a rapid life cycle consisting of egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Nymphs pass through five distinct developmental stages before reaching maturity. Favorable temperatures and moisture levels significantly accelerate reproduction rates, often leading to multiple overlapping generations within a single growing season.

The damage caused by this insect is twofold. Direct damage occurs when nymphs and adults pierce plant tissues to feed on phloem sap, leading to wilting, stunted growth, and chlorosis of the foliage. Indirect damage is often more severe, as the insect serves as a vector for various plant pathogens, including phytoplasmas and viruses, which can devastate crop yields.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Exitianus indicus. Farmers should implement regular field scouting using yellow sticky cards to monitor population dynamics. Chemical control involves the timely application of insecticides when threshold levels are exceeded. Furthermore, maintaining clean fields and removing weed hosts significantly reduces the refuge areas available for the pest population to survive and multiply.
