Description
It is important to emphasize that Fasciola is not a crop pest. It is a genus of parasitic flatworms, specifically trematodes, classified within the order Plagiorchiida and the family Fasciolidae. These organisms are strictly veterinary parasites that affect livestock and humans, causing a condition known as fascioliasis.
The biology of Fasciola is highly dependent on an aquatic environment. Its life cycle requires an intermediate host, typically freshwater snails. After leaving the snail host, the larvae, known as cercariae, encyst as metacercariae on the leaves and stems of aquatic or semi-aquatic plants, waiting to be ingested by grazing mammals.
Plants themselves do not suffer any physiological damage, tissue loss, or growth inhibition from the presence of Fasciola. The parasite does not feed on plant materials and should never be confused with insects, mites, or nematodes that cause direct crop damage. Its impact on agriculture is entirely indirect, affecting animal health and farm productivity.
Agronomic management strategies, therefore, are focused on preventing livestock from grazing in habitats where the intermediate snail host is present. Controlling the snail population through land improvement is the primary method to mitigate the risk of disease transmission within the farm ecosystem.

- Fencing off ponds and marshy areas from livestock access.
- Implementing regular deworming schedules for cattle and sheep.
